Eric Saade took a stand for Palestine by to pull a Palestinian shawl out of his jacket sleeve when he performed the song “Popular” during Tuesday's semi-finals.

The organizer EBU regrets the incident in a comment to Expressen:

“The Eurovision song contest is a live show. Everyone who performs is well aware of the rules of the competition and we regret that Eric Saade chose to compromise with the idea of ​​having the competition neutral.”

Eric Saade, who himself has Palestinian origins, has been critical of the ban on wearing Palestinian scarves and other flags during Eurovision.

“It's more important than ever to stand on THAT STAGE. You can take our symbols, but you can't take away my presence”‚ he wrote on Instagram before the competition.
