The Flemish subsidy budget for EVs has run out, but subsidies continue

The available Flemish subsidy budget for electric cars has probably run out, says the Flemish government. The government had made 26 million euros available for this, but a subsidy for 27.7 million euros has now been requested. Flanders is looking for more money.

In mid-April, there were 4,980 subsidy applications for new EVs and 932 applications for second-hand EVs, according to figures that Flemish Member of Parliament Sofie Mertens requested and shared with VRT. If all these applications were approved, this would amount to a subsidy amount of almost 27.7 million euros. An amount of 26 million euros was provided for the whole of 2024.

Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters tells VRT that every requested, eligible premium will be honored, including subsidy applications that are still being submitted. “This means that the Flemish government will provide additional resources.” It is not clear where this extra money will come from.

Flemish people have been able to apply for a subsidy for a new or used electric car since February this year, where the new price of a new car may not exceed 40,000 euros. For the second-hand car this is 60,000 euros. The subsidy is 5,000 euros for a new car, with a maximum of 25 percent of the purchase price, or 3,000 euros for a second-hand car. The subsidy only applies to this calendar year.
