According to the motion, which was put forward by the youth union Junge Union at a party conference, the Christian Democrats will work for temporary conscription to be introduced.

The Christian Democrats have already promised to introduce a year of compulsory community service for young people, either in the armed forces or in civil society.

< p>According to the new resolution, the German Bundeswehr must determine its needs every year and a corresponding number of citizens must be called in.

– We must not continue to leave the defense of our democracy to the principle of hope, says Johannes Winkel, president of de Junge Union.

He describes conscription as a “short-term and realistic option” to address the Bundeswehr's personnel problems.

Germany abolished conscription in 2011, but in and with the war in Ukraine, the debate has resurfaced about whether young men and women should be drafted.
