Not until now have there been any major changes in Denmark's abortion legislation from 1973, which allowed free abortion up to twelve weeks of pregnancy for women over the age of 18. After that, a specific approval from an abortion consultation is required.

In September 2023, an ethics committee in Denmark proposed to raise the abortion limit.

According to Sophie Løhde, Minister of the Interior and Health from the Venstre party, it's time for change.

“There are no health effects that speak for the current weekly limit, nor is there anything to indicate that a shift in the weekly limit would lead to significantly more or later abortions,” she says in a statement.

In addition to the government parties, Socialist Folkeparti (SF), Enhedslisten, De Radikale and Alternativet also support the proposal, which is expected to come into force on June 1, 2025.
