Microsoft adds passkey support to consumer accounts. This makes it one of the largest services for which the passwordless login method is available. Users can log in with their face, finger, PIN code or security key.

Microsoft writes on a support page that in the future users can create a passkey on their personal Microsoft account. With passkeys it is possible to log in without a password. Instead, a key pair is created that is linked to a physical device and the account. Tweakers previously wrote a background article about how that works.

According to Microsoft, users can create a passkey themselves and secure it with a facial scan, fingerprint, PIN code or physical security key. These are the same security methods as Windows Hello, which users can already use to log in to their local Windows PCs. In the future, this will also be possible on local devices and with online accounts.

Login applies to Microsoft apps and websites. Microsoft specifically mentions Microsoft 365 and Copilot, but passkey support for the mobile versions of applications will only be available in the coming weeks.
