June 17, 2023 ran a number of horses on Djurgården. Several people were injured, one of whom was a man in his 70s so seriously that he later died.

The horses had been used in a horse riding event organized by a now 56-year-old man. The man had tied the five horses at a restaurant, where his company had stopped for lunch.

For an unknown reason, the horses became frightened and tore away from the staging area. At least one of them ran aground on a footpath, where the now-deceased man was with his wife, who was also seriously injured.

– The man's negligence consists above all in the fact that he has tied the five horses to a restaurant and then sat on the outdoor terrace. He has also tied them up in a way that was particularly risky. The action has drastically increased the risks of the horses running aground, says the court's chairman, chief councilor Johan Borgström.

When assessing the man's negligence, the district court has attached particular importance to the fact that many unprotected people, including the elderly and children, were in the area. According to the court, the fact that the incident did not have even more serious consequences was only due to coincidence.

The man is sentenced for grossly causing the death of another, grossly causing bodily harm and causing danger to another. The penalty is imprisonment for one year and three months. The man must also pay damages to people who were exposed to the horses and to the deceased man's relatives.
