SD: Will leave ECR if Orban's party enters

Foreign. The Liberal Sweden Democrats will leave the ECR party group in the European Parliament in protest if Viktor Orban's conservative Fidesz party enters. This is stated by party leader Jimmie Åkesson for Göteborgs-Posten.

Fidesz has expressed an interest in joining ECR after being kicked out of the Moderates' politically correct party group EPP.

According to the Sweden Democrats, it is Orban's call for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia that has angered the party. Previously, they warned that they would leave the group if Fidesz joined, and now the threat is confirmed by Åkesson.

– It is very strange that Orban is shaking hands with Putin in this situation, says Åkesson.

In the interview, Åkesson also distances himself from the German conservative party Alternative for Germany. According to Åkesson, is a “very unstable party”.

AFD is in turn part of the party group ID, which SD member of parliament Charlie Weimers regularly criticizes for its alleged Russian friendliness.
