A large-scale new survey shows that twice as many young people would vote for AFD today as in 2022 and that the party is now the largest in Germany in the age group 14 -30.

“The AFD has obviously succeeded in portraying itself as a protest party against the government parties and as a problem solver,” the study says.

The survey also notes that politically conservative, immigration-critical and “xenophobic” statements have increased among young people.

“We can speak of a clear shift to the right within the young population,” summarizes researcher Hurrelmann.

The study authors note that young Germans are more used to living in international and multi-ethnic circles than older generations.

“Despite this, there seems to be a growing concern that too many refugees are entering the country and for that this poses a threat due to the lack of living space, social division and economically strained social systems.”

The growing concern over immigration, inflation and support for the war in Ukraine has been a boon for the AFD one year, the party has almost doubled its share of votes among young people. With its 22 percent, the party is now number one among those under the age of 30.

In the survey, the Christian Democrats also do well among young people and come in second place with 20 percent support. At the same time, the ruling left-liberal government has seen its support among young Germans drop significantly.
