In the late summer and autumn of 2022, speed cameras were stolen in a row places in Central Sweden, which led to wild speculation.

A bold one came from the blogger Lars Wilderäng, who determined that it must be the Russians who are behind it. Wilderäng, who is a liberal conspiracy theorist, often points to Putin as the cause of everything that happens in Sweden.

Several media caught on and spread the conspiracy theory – which was that the cameras would be used by Russia for to build drones for the Ukrainian war.

On October 20, 2022, the police received an anonymous tip that led to the arrest of a man, and the tangle was unraveled.

Now seven people are charged – six men between 20 and 25 years old and a 20-year-old woman – for 25 grand thefts and several attempted grand thefts, writes Samnytt.

Mocked media
According to Samnytt, all are Swedes, and they have resold the cameras via the Facebook marketplace, among other things.

Chat logs show that the suspects themselves mocked the theories that Putin was behind the thefts.

“Wtf hahahhaha,” wrote one of them in a comment about the media's writings.
