The study from the Language Council at Isof and the Department of Nordic Languages at Uppsala University focused on investigating attitudes towards different pronunciations and suburban slang in Sweden.
One of the aims was to map which associations and impressions different pronunciations evoke.
– The pronunciations that were perceived more negatively were Arabic pronunciation and suburban sound, says Ellen Bijvoet, docent at the Department of Nordic Languages at Uppsala university, to SVT.
In the study, Finnish, English and German breaks were rated as most positive by the participants. These accents were considered easy to identify and perceived as attractive, friendly and trust-inspiring.
The study also showed that women who speak with an accent were generally judged more positively than men with a similar accent.
– It is interesting that we seem to find it easier for women who have some form of accent than for men who do, says Ellen Bijvoet.
The results of the study will be published on ISOF's website during April.
