A majority of the Riksdag group has been stated to be against the law that was hammered through in the Riksdag this week, but Maria Malmer Stenergard defends it.

– I think so is a balanced proposal and this is an issue that the Moderates have pursued since 2011, she tells Kvartal.

Reporter Magnus Thorén then takes an example of a man who has taken advantage of the law's new opportunity to register as a woman . So is the man a woman, according to the minister?

– It is a woman if the person concerned says he wants to be a woman, replies Malmer Stenergard.

Thorén then wonders if the minister would have any problems with to consider Thorén as a woman, if he starts calling himself that.

– I would respect your will to be considered a woman, call you by the name you want to be called. And then it is clear that the physical; if you haven't changed it, you still have physical attributes that allow you to associate you then with being a man. But as I said, I think it's about showing respect, says Maria Malmer Stenegaard.
