The sex purchase law was tightened in 2022 by removing fines from the penalty scale.
“Crime mainly affects women, but also men and non-binary people,” the police write on their website.
The main message of the campaign is that all people can join and act against the purchase of sex.< /p>
“Talking about buying sex and its consequences can feel difficult, but to act is to show that you care. Speaking up and daring to distance yourself makes it easier for others to get involved – it can create changed attitudes and behaviours”, the police write.
– People who sell sex are in a particular vulnerability as they often lack a social safety net. Everyone can contribute to reducing this crime by talking to people you suspect of buying sex or by clearly distancing yourself from buying sex in all contexts, says Erik Widstrand, acting regional police chief in the Stockholm region.
It is Operation kvinnofrid which on Monday launches the “Stop buying sex” campaign. The aim of the campaign is to highlight the problem and create a counter force against sex buying in the public.
The campaign also wants to encourage sex buyers to stop buying sex by referring them to KAST (buyers of sexual services), a reception that offers support and help to stop buying sex.
“By approaching the sex buyers and motivating them to stop buying sex, the situation can change for people living in prostitution,” the police write.
The campaign will be seen in various media as well as on outdoor digital screens around the county for five weeks. It also returns for five weeks this autumn, starting in mid-September.
