Ferrari will investigate battery technologies together with the Italian university and NXP

Ferrari has unveiled a new E-Cells electrochemistry lab. The Italian automaker will conduct research into battery technologies together with an Italian university and the Dutch chipmaker NXP. The research center will be opened within the University of Bologna, Ferrari writes in a press release. The laboratory will also be led by scientists from that university. The research will focus on lithium batteries. This mainly focuses on techniques such as solid state batteries, fast charging, thermal charging and battery safety and performance.

Ferrari announces that it will share all findings of the research center with the Dutch chip maker NXP, which is also participating in the project. The Italian automaker will also share the research results with its suppliers, who can then produce battery cells for Ferrari. These cells are then assembled by the automaker itself into a complete battery pack.

Ferrari has been working on a fully electric sports car for years. The company wants to present it next year. The company wants sixty percent of its cars to be hybrid or fully electric by around 2026, the manufacturer announced in 2022. Ferrari said at the end of March that it would also work with South Korea's SK On, a battery supplier for Ferrari's hybrid SF90 Stradale, to develop batteries for its supercars.
