Hackers broadcast Russian propaganda video on BabyTV by hacking satellite

Hackers have hacked satellite company Eutelsat with which they managed to play a Russian propaganda video on BabyTV, Nu.nl writes. It is not clear how the hack took place.

Satellite company Eutelsat is said to have been the target of an 'advanced hack' sometime last week, reports Nu.nl. The news medium bases this on 'various insiders in the TV broadcasting world', although it is not clear how closely these sources were involved in the story. The hackers managed to take over BabyTV's encrypted TV signal and play a Russian propaganda video on the channel, according to a video that a Nu.nl reader shared with the news medium.

There were including images of Russian President Putin and the flag of Russia. In addition to the Netherlands, the signal would also have been sent to Portugal and Scandinavian countries. According to the news site, this is the first known time in the Netherlands that a TV broadcast has been taken over by hacking a satellite.

Eutelsat said in a response to the Portuguese medium Observador that 'an external radio frequency interference has affected some video services for a small number of content customers for a short period of time. The satellite company says it is investigating the hack and taking measures to prevent a recurrence. A BabyTV spokesperson told Observador that it involved 'two unexpected interruptions'. It is not clear who is or are responsible for the hack.
