Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment is conducting a round of layoffs. The company announced this on social media. The studio became independent a week ago; the company was then spun off from SEGA.
“Earlier today we shared details of a layoff with Relic employees,” the studio wrote on LinkedIn. “Firing people was not an easy decision and was made solely for the purpose of giving Relic the best possible chance to survive in an increasingly uncertain industry. It in no way reflects the expertise, passion or character of the employees involved .”
Relic does not report how many employees are involved. However, an external producer from Relic reported in a separate LinkedIn message that the number involved was 41 people, PC Gamer noted. Last year, the studio fired 121 employees as part of a reorganization.
The new round of layoffs comes a week after Relic Entertainment became an independent studio. The company was until recently owned by SEGA, but was sold at the end of March. Relic would then continue as an independently managed studio. The company was able to continue independently with 'help from an external investor'. It is not known who that investor is.
