Researchers: data collection of standard Apple apps is difficult to disable

The data collection of standard apps in iOS and macOS, among others, is difficult to disable if users want to, Finnish researchers conclude. Many standard apps also collect data that users are not aware of.

For example, Siri can monitor the use of all apps, unless users disable this in the Siri settings per app. This requires tens to hundreds of clicks for users to turn off the 'learn from this app' option, the researchers write.

The researchers from Finland's Aalto University not only examined which data were collected during the set- up and use of devices goes to Apple, but also looked at users who wanted to minimize the data that goes to Apple. They recommend, among other things, that Apple move and simplify the settings for this. Apple has not yet responded to the researchers' findings. In addition to Siri, they also examined Safari, Family Sharing, iMessage, FaceTime, Location Services, Find My and biometric authentication via Touch ID.
