The Dutch smartphone maker Fairphone wants to make a phone costing 400 euros. That is just over half the price of the current Fairphone 5, which costs around 700 euros. This should allow more people to buy the phone.
The new CEO Reinier Hendriks wants to attract more customers with the lower price in order to make the brand more mainstream, he says in an interview with Handelsblatt, a German business newspaper . The CEO says that the Fairphone 5 now covers '80 percent of customers' needs', but that would be too little. “People want to contribute, but they don't want to sacrifice everything.”
That's why the price has to be lowered. By doing so, Fairphone can purchase components on a larger scale and therefore negotiate lower prices and better conditions. This brings Fairphone's goal of a supply chain with fairer materials and working conditions closer.
In addition to the lower price, Fairphone wants to sell more phones by expanding the number of countries. That is why 23 countries must be added. There is already a deal for the sale of Fairphones in Great Britain, writes Handelsblatt.
