Belgian prosecutors have previously investigated whether Ursula von der Leyen had a conflict of interest and acted corruptly in the vaccine negotiations.
Among other things, the EU leader is accused of having deleted text messages sent between her and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the negotiations in 2021, which culminated in a vaccine agreement worth approximately SEK 225 billion.
Now the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has taken over the investigation against von der Leyen, writes Politico.
The scandal, known as “Pfizergate”, became a court case after the European Commission refused to release text messages allegedly sent between Ursula von der Leyen and Albert Bourla.
The New York Times, which first exposed the scandal , is suing the Commission in a separate process for not releasing the text messages.
The EU Commission has refused to even comment on whether the messages even exist.
