The 28-year-old man is accused of running over the boy, who was cycling over a pedestrian crossing in Valsta in Sigtuna municipality on June 7, 2023.
The eleven-year-old suffered such serious injuries that he later died .
The accused man comes from Iraq but has received Swedish citizenship and therefore cannot be deported. He is said to be part of the criminal immigrant gang Märstaneträvket and is well known to the police. He has previously been convicted in the district court of a murder, but was acquitted in the court of appeal on evidentiary grounds.
The 28-year-old was initially arrested but released by the prosecutor, who made the assessment that the investigation did not require the man to be deprived of his liberty.
The investigation has now been completed and charges have been brought for the crimes causing the death of another and negligence in traffic.
– In my opinion, the preliminary investigation has shown that the man was negligent when he crossed the pedestrian crossing. A greater measure of caution is required at an unattended crossing and he has caused the boy's death by hitting him, says state prosecutor Daniel Suneson in a statement.
