“This cowardly crime will not go unanswered “, Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi writes in a statement.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard says two generals and five officers were killed in Monday's attack, including top general Mohammad Reza Zahedi.
The consulate building that was attacked was completely destroyed, and Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian describes the attack as “a violation of all international conventions”.
The incident is seen as yet another escalation of the war in Gaza, which is increasingly developing into a regional conflict. It is not common for a foreign mission to be attacked in this way, as diplomatic values are usually respected even in wartime.
