MSI has announced the Spatium M580 Frozr SSD. The successor to the Spatium M570 has a read speed of 14.6GB/s and a write speed of 12.7GB/s, making it the fastest PCIe 5.0 SSD to date. The module will be available in variants of 1, 2 and 4 terabytes.
The MSI Spatium M580 Frozr is a Gen5 SSD with the same Phison PS5026-E26 controller and the same B58R NAND from Micron as the Spatium M570, which was released late last year. In the M580, the speeds mentioned by MSI in particular are higher than with the earlier model. According to the company, the module achieves sequential read speeds of 14.6GB/s and write speeds of 12.7GB/s. This means that the theoretical reading speed in particular is higher than with the previous model. That had a read speed of 12.4GB/s, which should make the new model about eighteen percent faster. For write speed, the gain is almost eight percent compared to the 11.8GB/s in the M570.
If the stated speed indeed matches how the SSD performs, it will generally be the fastest Gen5 SSD to hit the market. In February, Crucial also showed a PCIe 5.0 SSD that is at approximately the same level. However, the T705 achieves a maximum sequential speed of 14.5GB/s, slightly lower than the Spatium. The theoretical write speed of the T705 is slightly higher at 12.7GB/s.
The PCIe 5.0 SSD has a passive heatsink with three heat pipes and aluminum fins with which the SSD can be cooled by twenty degrees, according to MSI. In addition, there is a dram cache buffer and SLC cache in the SSD, but the company does not provide any further details about this. MSI also says the model has a higher TBW than the previous model, but doesn't say how many terabytes. The Spatium M580 has a five-year warranty and will be available in 1, 2 and 4TB variants. The price and availability are also not yet known.
