Cloud service Vultr adjusts terms of use for data use after commotion

Cloud service Vultr has adjusted its new terms of use after heavy criticism from users. The terms stated that the platform would receive the rights to all hosted content, including music, images and applications.

The terms of use were amended in January, but users were informed earlier this week, writes The Register Thursday. Vultr asked users to agree to changes via a pop-up in the control panel of Vultr's web client. This was followed by a wave of criticism, including on Reddit. Among other things, users complained about the lack of clarity of the clauses, which demanded, among other things, that Vultr be granted 'continuing, irrevocable, royalty-free rights to the hosted content'.

Vultr has since amended the user terms and removed the controversial clauses . CEO J.J. Kardwell tells The Register that the passages related to messages on customer forums and not content on private servers. “We don't use user data. We never have and we never will. We take privacy and security very seriously. It's at the core of what we do globally,” Kardwell said. The CEO further points out that the passages were already worded in this way before January. Yet they have been removed and replaced by 'passages with clearer and simplified language'.
