The background is that the ultra-Orthodox parties are not satisfied that the government has not managed to reach a new agreement on the exemption of ultra-Orthodox Jews from the obligation to do military service.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews have been spared the slur since the establishment of the state of Israel in the 1940s. More secular Jews, however, have resented the privileged group and want to see changes.

The ultra-Orthodox parties can now oust Netanyahu if a new law does not come into effect before the exemption expires in April. At the same time, the secular parties can leave the government cooperation if a new exception is introduced.
