Donald Trump was probably the most pro-Israel president the US has ever had.
But now even he has had enough of the war in Gaza.
– You have to end the war, he says in an interview with Israel Hayom.
Trump continues:< /p>
– We must have peace. This cannot continue. And Israel has to be very careful because you are losing a lot of the world's support.
He also turns to the question of how, as president, he would “counteract the tide of anti-Semitism in the wake of the outbreak of war”.
– Well, that's because you fought back. And I think Israel made a very big mistake. I wanted to call [Israel] and say “don't do it”. These photos and images, bombs being dropped on buildings in Gaza. – About 15 years ago, Israel had the strongest lobby. If you were a politician, you couldn't say anything bad about Israel, that meant the end of your political career. Today it is almost the opposite.
Nowadays there are some members of Congress who openly criticize Israel, according to Trump.
Even the White House has recently begun to deviate from its previous unconditional support for the Israelis. On Monday, for example, the US passed a resolution in the UN Security Council calling for a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan, which ends on April 9.
