Domestic. So far, 129 years in prison for serious blue light sabotage have been sentenced, distributed among 60 people, after the Koran riots in Linköping and Norrköping in April 2022.

It has been almost two years since the riots broke out in Linköping and Norrköping. Since then, investigative teams in both cities have worked together with prosecutors to investigate the crimes and bring suspects to justice.

The identified people who were most active or least masked in the riots and the youngest have been prioritized first.

A total of 60 people have been prosecuted to date on twelve counts – and so far 129 years in prison for serious blue light sabotage have been sentenced. This includes both district court judgments and appeal court judgments. The majority of people under the age of 15 have also been dealt with within the framework of the Young Offenders Act (LUL 31). This does not generate prosecution but enables social services to take action. In addition to this, 70 months of youth supervision has also been added.

– It is an extensive and ongoing investigation and we expect to continue through at least all of 2024. We have more charges ahead of us and we are constantly learning and refining and streamlines our investigation method. So far, the method has been very successful in terms of convictions, says Emma Backlund, head of investigations in Linköping, on the police's website.

Despite a tough 2023 with many other serious crimes such as bombings, attempted murders and murders, the Norrköping group has prosecuted 30 people for the riots so far and expects another ten before the summer.

– Throughout the course of the investigation, we have learned something new . The main success factor in the investigation has been that many different skills worked together and jointly created a product for the prosecutor, says Jan Staaf, head of the investigation in Norrköping.

At the same time that the investigations have been pushed forward and amounts of film material have been reviewed, also much else has developed in the police region east in the last two years.

– We have learned from what happened. In addition to the important crisis management and work environment issues, we continuously work to develop our ability to handle similar events. Today, we have better tactical ability, more advanced camera technology, and we have built on more equipment and training in special police tactics, says Malena Grann, regional police chief in police region East.
