Judge Santiago Pedraz ruled in a case between television companies such as MediaSet, Atresmedia and Movistar Plus and the service, which the court concluded had shortcomings when it came to handling copyright.

The court now obliges the internet providers Vodafone, Orange, Digi, Movistar, Masmovil and others to block Telegram “as soon as possible.”

According to the court, the measure is “necessary, appropriate and proportionate”.

Telegram usage continues so far in Spain but is expected to be shut down shortly.

Telegram was founded by Russian brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov as an alternative to WhatsApp, and the service has been active since 2013.
