Brave has released an update to its privacy-focused browser. It must ensure that its VPN service is no longer automatically downloaded on Windows PCs.
Version 1.64.109 of Brave ensures that its VPN service is no longer automatically downloaded when users install the browser. From now on, this will only be installed when purchasing Brave VPN. If users without a subscription to the VPN service update their browser, the VPN will be removed from their computer. This concerns the Firewall+VPN service that was released in 2022, consisting of Brave VPN and Brave Wireguard. The service emerged from a collaboration between Brave and Guardian.
In October, Ghacks discovered that this VPN service is being installed unsolicited by Brave users on Windows PCs. Brave VPN remained in a dormant mode until the user subscribes to the service. The company announced that it was working on a solution to this problem. According to Brave, the service does not send any data to the company while it is in sleep mode. It was already possible to remove Firewall+VPN manually.
