The attackers, a group of men dressed in camouflage clothing, opened fire in the entrance hall and blocked the exit. An explosion occurred and the building began to burn.

In the concert hall, where the Russian rock band Piknik was about to take the stage, the terrorists began systematically shooting people in the audience. Many visitors were killed in this way, while others suffocated to death from the fire smoke.

The concert hall has room for 6,000 people and the concert is said to have been sold out.

The perpetrators are still at large. .

The terrorist group IS Khorasan has claimed responsibility. It is the same branch of IS that is said to have been behind the terrorist attack in Kerman in Iran at the beginning of January, when 96 people were killed in connection with a commemoration of the national hero General Qasem Soleimani.

The US Embassy in Russia warned earlier in March American citizens for a possible upcoming terrorist attack in Moscow. The warning included public events such as concerts.

The Russian Ministry of Culture has announced that all public events in the country will be canceled in the coming days as a safety measure. Security measures have also been tightened at airports and train stations.
