The growth in the number of Dutch people with an e-bike, e-scooter or light electric vehicle is stagnating at 43 percent. Multiscope reports this based on research among 5,500 Dutch people. The number of owners of such vehicles increased by 1 percentage point in the past year.
These are Dutch people who are 18 years or older and will own at least one electric bicycle, electric scooter or light electric vehicle in 2023. The latter category includes, for example, electric scooters or electric cargo bikes. The number of owners has increased considerably over the past four years, Multiscope reports in the E-bike Monitor. In 2020 and 2021, this was 35 and 36 percent of the Dutch population respectively. A year later, this percentage rose to 42 percent 'partly thanks to the corona pandemic'. A year later, in 2023, another percentage point was added.
The electric bicycles, scooters and light vehicles together have a value of 12.9 billion euros. Of these, 96 percent are electric bicycles, 3 percent are electric scooters and 1 percent are electric scooters. The total value of the three vehicle categories increased by 500 million euros last year.
5,554 Dutch respondents were interviewed for the study, which according to Multiscope is representative of the Dutch population. Of the respondents, 65 percent say they do not plan to purchase an e-bike, e-scooter or lev in the future. A year earlier this was still 52 percent. A tenth of Dutch people expect to purchase one of the electric vehicles within a year. A quarter say they will do this in 'the longer term'.
Multiscope market researchers indicate that the number of respondents who actually buy a new vehicle is often lower than the number of people who previously said they would buy one. go buy. The researchers therefore say that the current stagnation may continue.
