Expert: Swedish conscripts will be forced to participate in foreign wars

Domestic. NATO membership likely means that conscripts who have been assigned to war may be forced to fight abroad if the alliance ends up at war. This is what Jacob Westberg, docent at the Norwegian Defense University, tells TT.

– Those who have undergone conscription training and are assigned to war may be placed in units that are registered to NATO's defense planning, says Jacob Westberg.

He states that this is “logical”.

War conscripts have an obligation to participate in the defense of Sweden. But those in power have, with NATO entry, changed the meaning of “defending Sweden”.

– When we are now allies, the defense can begin outside Sweden, Defense Minister Pål Jonsson (M) told Sveriges Radio earlier in March.

He further stated that it “cannot be ruled out” that conscript Swedes are sent to NATO wars abroad.
