Nokia claims that Reddit may be infringing on its patents

Nokia has sent Reddit a letter stating that Reddit may be infringing on some of its patents. The social media company confirmed this on Tuesday. Reddit says it is assessing the claims.

Reddit shares Nokia's complaint in a document with the American stock market watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Commission. “Nokia sent us a letter on March 18, 2024 indicating that Reddit is infringing certain of its patents. We will evaluate their claims,” the social media company said. “As we face increasing competition and visibility, the likelihood that we will receive more intellectual property claims against us increases.” It is not known exactly which patents are involved.

Nokia's complaint comes shortly before Reddit's long-awaited IPO, which will take place this week. The social media company has been wanting to go public for some time. The company hopes to raise hundreds of millions of dollars this week, for a total valuation of $6.5 billion.

Nokia is increasingly filing patent complaints with companies. The telecom company signed a patent agreement with Chinese phone maker Vivo in February, after a years-long legal battle. It previously signed agreements with five other phone companies to license its 5G patents. The company confirmed in a statement to Reuters that it has also filed a complaint with Reddit: “Nokia is seeking compensation for the use of its key inventions and will reinvest the royalties in the development of the next generation of communications and multimedia technologies,” the company said .
