Google Pixel Launcher gives users the option to switch search engines

Google has released an update to its Pixel Launcher that allows users in the EU to choose a different search engine. The company does this to comply with the Digital Markets Act.

Until now, it has not been possible to choose a search engine other than Google on Pixel phones. So by default, users saw a Google search bar widget on their home screen, which could not be disabled. It was possible to add an extra widget of the desired search engine, but then users would have two search bar widgets on their home screen. While it's still not possible to remove the search bar widget entirely, users can now swap the Google search bar for a competitor's search bar.

A user who shared screenshots with tech journalist Mishaal Rahman lets you know that you have received a notification stating that it is now possible to choose a different search engine. In addition to Google, the user could choose from DuckDuckGo and Ecosia. Users will probably have to download the desired search engine app first before it will appear in the selection list.

Google is only adding this function for EU users. The company does this to comply with the Digital Markets Act law. This is a European law that should limit the power of large tech companies.
As a result, Google, among others, must allow more competition, including in the field of competitive search engines.
