Android 15 includes a feature that allows compatible smartphones to perform location detection, even when the device is turned off. That's what Android Police writes. The function would not work on every smartphone, because hardware adjustments are also required to devices.
According to Android Police, the function was called Powered Off Finding and has reportedly been in the works for more than a year. In April of last year, traces of this functionality were already found in the source code of Android 14, but according to the editors of the tech website, location detection would now come to Android 15. After all, that version of the Android operating system would contain the necessary APIs.
Android Police writes that Powered Off Finding will not function on every Android smartphone. Manufacturers would first have to make some hardware adjustments to their smartphones. For example, the Bluetooth controller must be able to receive power, even when the device is completely switched off. Android Police claims that Google wants to bring the feature to the Pixel 9 smartphone and the tech website also believes that Pixel 8 and 8 Pro should support the feature. The Pixel 7, 7 Pro and Pixel Fold smartphones would not support the function.
