AMD makes ray tracing libraries for HIP programming language open source

AMD has open sourced some ray tracing libraries for its HIP programming language. This should allow developers who want to add ray tracing functionality to their HIP applications to do so more easily.

AMD announced the news on GPUOpen. The company has made the ray tracing libraries and all additional documentation available on GitHub. AMD does not say why it made the libraries open source. The editors of Wccftech suspect that this has to do with start-up Tiny Corp. Tiny Corp is a computer company currently developing AI hardware. It uses AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT video cards and is said to have encountered problems with the firmware of these video cards during the development of its AI systems.

HIP stands for Heterogeneous-Compute Interface for Portability. It is a C++ runtime API and kernel language that allows developers to write programs for both AMD and Nvidia hardware. Developers can also use HIP to convert software written for Nvidia GPUs into a codebase that can run on AMD GPUs.
