Microsoft is working on a single Teams app that both private and business users can use. In that one app it will even be possible to switch between those two types of accounts, so that users no longer have to download two separate apps.
Microsoft writes in a blog post that it is testing a preview of such an app. It does this in build 26080 of Windows 11 24H2, which is now being tested in the Canary and Dev Channels. That experimental build contains one Teams application. According to Microsoft, this makes it possible to link multiple accounts and switch between them.
This can even concern private accounts and work accounts. “We received consistent feedback from personal and business users: you want a single Teams app that allows you to switch between personal and work accounts,” Microsoft wrote. Users can switch between accounts via a drop-down menu, but this can also be done just before entering a conversation. It is also possible to have a conversation from the app without an account.
Microsoft further says that the notifications for Teams are adjusted. The notification bar will then show which account a call is coming in and more details will be shown in the banner.
There used to be two separate apps for Teams. That was often confusing for users; there was both the Microsoft Teams (free) app for private users, but business users had to download Microsoft Teams Work or School. For a long time, the (free) version was installed as standard in Windows 11. Since last year it has been possible to remove that app, but users still often had two versions of the chat app on their PC. Microsoft says the new single app will still be called (Work or School), but that only applies to the testing period. In the future, that app will only be called Microsoft Teams. The (free) app will be removed from Windows 'in a future release'.
