National Police Chief Petra Lundh and Deputy National Police Chief Stefan Hector were on hand to raise the NATO flag outside the police station on Kungsholmen in Stockholm.

< p>– It feels very good that Sweden is now a member of the NATO defense alliance. Membership contributes to security and stability in Sweden's immediate area and in Europe. It is a matter for the whole of society and a central point of departure for the development of total defence, i.e. the military defense and civil defence, said Petra Lundh.

Membership means certain new tasks for the Police Authority, among other things linked to the host country support . For example, be responsible for the security of NATO units and assist in directing traffic when the units are within our borders.

– We are well prepared for Sweden's membership, but it is only now, as a full member, that we can live up to the requirements that membership requires. Now we get access to all forums and can see an increased internationalization of our work with civil defense, not least in a Nordic context as we will now form an operational area for NATO, says Stefan Hector.
