Microsoft will expand support for IPv6 in Windows 11. The operating system will now also use CLAT on non-mobile networks. This would also allow IPv6 connections to be enforced for devices with a WiFi or Ethernet connection.
Microsoft writes on a support page that it will support the Connectivity Layer Address Translation or CLAT in a future version of Windows 11. expands functionality. CLAT makes it possible to connect IPv4 devices to an IPv6 address, with CLAT serving as a translator.
CLAT always had limited functionality in Windows 11 because it only worked with modems. Microsoft says it now wants to extend the functionality to non-mobile network interfaces. This could be WiFi or an Ethernet connection, for example. This makes the ability to enforce IPv6 connections much more widely available for more hardware.
Microsoft says it wants to add the functionality to Windows 11 in the future. The company does not say when that will happen. In any case, it happens first for Insiders. Microsoft says it made the decision following a survey it distributed to system administrators.
