Microsoft is discontinuing the feature to upload files to OneDrive via URL

Microsoft is removing the option to upload files to OneDrive via a URL. According to the company, this functionality was rarely used, but is expensive due to the extensive maintenance required.

Microsoft writes that the function will be disconnected on March 29 this year. This was an experimental feature that had been in OneDrive since 2021. Users could upload a file to OneDrive by providing a URL. The feature worked for all consumers with OneDrive.

According to Microsoft, the feature was useful for users with mobile devices or for add-ons in browsers, where the files themselves were difficult to access. Microsoft says the feature was rarely used. The maintenance costs would be high. Furthermore, Microsoft says the service “does not align with our vision of using OneDrive as a cloud storage service that syncs files between devices.”
