Akira Toriyama has died at the age of 68. The manga author created the Dragon Ball franchise and did the design work for several games, including the RPG Chrono Trigger and the Dragon Quest series.
Toriyama died on March 1 from complications of a brain hemorrhage, but news of his death was only announced on Friday.
Toriyama's best-known work is Dragon Ball, which appeared from 1984 to 1995 in the manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. In 1986, the anime adaptation of the first 194 chapters of Dragon Ball was released. More TV adaptations of Toriyama's Dragon Ball work followed later, including one of Dragon Ball Z. Several Dragon Ball games were also released over the years. Last year, the fighting game Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO announced. This year, a game adaptation of his manga Sand Land will be released, which is set in a post-apocalyptic world with an enormous water shortage.
Toriyama also did design work for various games. For example, he designed the characters of the SNES game Chrono Trigger and is responsible for the character design of the Dragon Quest series. There is another game in the works for the latter, Dragon Quest 12, but so far no release date has been announced.
