Domestic. Sweden is now officially a member of NATO – but there has still been no word on whether Swedish conscripts can be forced to fight at NATO's external border. Defense Minister Pål Jonsson (M), however, is open to the possibility that this will be the case.

– It cannot be ruled out. Conscription forms the basis of the Armed Forces' personnel supply, says Pål Jonson to Sveriges Radio.

The question was about whether Swedes who have done conscription and are stationed at war can be sent to fight at NATO's external border.

According to the law if total military service is required, conscripts may be used in the defense of Sweden. But according to the defense minister, the meaning of the defense of Sweden can change with NATO entry.

– When we are now allies, the defense can start outside Sweden, says Pål Jonson.

The minister says that it is important to have a “broad political consensus” on these issues and that it is therefore appropriate to address them in the defense committee.
