Google service Waze will provide users with more information when navigating, such as which lane drivers should use at roundabouts. In addition, Waze will inform drivers about upcoming speed reductions, ambulances and speed bumps.
The Waze app will show drivers more clearly when they approach the roundabout, which lane they should be in and when they should leave again. This improved roundabout view will be released worldwide this month for Android users and will come to iOS later this year, and is based, among other things, on user information. The information about speed reductions will come to both platforms this month and tell the user that the applicable maximum speed will be reduced over a certain distance. This way, drivers can slow down in time and avoid fines, says Google.
The app will also warn users about speed bumps, sharp bends and toll booths. Data from community members will also be used for this. The platform will also take into account the preferred route of users. 'Many' Waze users have a fixed preferred route that they use while navigating, which is not necessarily the fastest option, Google writes. From this month, Waze will show the user the usual route when starting a navigation session, where the driver can see how much traffic jam there is on that route. In addition, the user is shown the fastest option for comparison purposes.
Google also announces two features that so far have little impact on Dutch and Belgian users. For example, users in the United States and Canada can see more information about parking garages, such as how much they cost and whether there are EV charging points. The second function informs drivers about emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, that are stationary on the road. This way, drivers can prepare for this and will not be surprised. This feature is currently only coming to the US, Canada, Mexico and France, but should come to more countries in the future. The Netherlands will follow 'soon', Google tells Tweakers.
