Warner Bros. Discovery will take measures against account sharing for the HBO Max streaming service from 2025. It is not yet clear exactly how this will happen and for which markets the restrictions will initially be released.
Bloomberg reports this based on statements from Warner Bros. Discovery CEOs David Zaslav and JB Perette. In addition to expanding into new markets including South America and France, Zaslav and Perette say that to boost HBO Max's financials, “anti-password and account sharing initiatives” will be implemented starting in 2025.
Halfway HBO already changed its terms of use in 2023, so that accounts have since technically been linked to households. It is not clear whether the parent company of the streaming service will use a similar system as, for example, Netflix and Disney, where additional accounts can be added at a surcharge.
