Slovakia was previously a staunch supporter of the US/EU strategy of attrition against Russia in Ukraine.
But after the election last fall, Robert Fico came to power and he has taken a line reminiscent of neighboring Hungary: He advocates a ceasefire and peace settlement to prevent further bloodshed.
In a video message on the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Robert Fico stated that the war started already in 2014 with the coup d'état against the popularly elected President Viktor Yanukovych. The coup d'état was carried out in practice by militant neo-Nazi movements supported by the US and foreign liberals.
– This war started back in 2014 with the rampant spread of Ukrainian neo-Nazis. The bottom line is that Russia was tricked into thinking that NATO would not expand further east, and today it goes so far as to open the door for Ukraine to become a member of NATO, Fico said.
Russia has “repeatedly deceived by assurances that NATO will not expand further,” he stated.
All this, the Slovak prime minister said, has become a “good basis” for a third world war. According to Fico, both Moscow and Kiev should receive security guarantees, since there is no military solution to the conflict.
– We must harmonize these relations with Russia. Or what should we do? Pull back the Iron Curtain? Will we get an iron curtain somewhere on the Ukrainian-Russian border? What should it be good for? asked Robert Fico.
