Alexander Stubb was pitted against the openly gay environmentalist Pekka Haavisto .
The difference between the candidates was historically small – under 99,000 votes, reports Yle.
Alexander Stubb takes over as Finland's thirteenth president on March 1, replacing his party colleague from the Coalition Party, Sauli Niinistö .
Stubb was formerly Prime Minister of Finland and then profiled himself as a pronounced globalist. His victory in the presidential election will therefore further strengthen US loyalty within the Finnish establishment.
