Hungary still, as the last NATO- country, not approved Sweden's membership application. And in Washington they are now getting frustrated.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated at a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday that he spoke a few days ago with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who allegedly assured him that the Hungarian the parliament would approve Sweden's membership shortly after the parliament opened at the end of February.
The press conference was also attended by the White House's national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who expressed himself more threateningly and hinted that Hungary could be punished in case of continued recalcitrance.
— I am not going to stand here today and make specific threats or speculate about measures we could take. But of course our patience is not unlimited either. So we will continue to follow the matter closely but hope that a constructive solution to this issue can be reached in the very near term, he said.
American politicians have previously proposed sanctions against Hungary for the country's withdrawal on the ratification.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has requested that Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) come to Budapest to discuss membership. However, Kristersson has given cocky answers and declared that he can meet Orbán after Hungary approves the Swedish application.
