As usual, the list is dominated by the point of significant traffic violation with 18,324 decisions, shows compiled statistics that the Swedish Transport Agency has produced.

The essential traffic violations are the reason for more than half of the driving license revocations, while they decrease in number compared to the previous year, from 19,215 in 2022 to 18,324 in 2023. The absolute most common reason for revocation is speeding, but there are also other types of traffic violations such as running red lights and not keeping enough distance to the vehicle in front.

The number of recalls due to drunken driving or drugged driving increases by roughly 11 percent, from 6,310 to 6,991. It is the highest number of revocations for that reason in 10 years.

– There is an absolute correlation between police traffic enforcement and the number of revocations due to drunken driving or drugged driving. They have simply taken more affected drivers to the side of the road, says Åsa Bergqvist, head of unit at the Swedish Transport Agency.

If a doctor, during an examination or review of medical records, judges that a patient is unfit to have a driver's license, the doctor must report this to the Swedish Transport Agency which then investigates the driving license possession. The number of revoked driving licenses due to medical reasons, including reports from doctors, increased by roughly 12 percent in 2023 and for the first time amounted to more than 6,000.
