The number of reported crimes increased in 2023

Domestic. During 2023, roughly 1.5 million crimes were reported, which is four percent more than in 2022. This is shown by the preliminary statistics on reported crimes in 2023 from the Crime Prevention Council, Brå.

In 2021 and 2022, reported crimes decreased overall, but increased again in 2023. Compared to 10 years ago (2014), the number of reported crimes increased by 5 percent.

Fraud crimes were the crime category that increased the most in 2023, by 22 percent to 237,692 crimes, compared to 2022. Seen in a ten-year perspective, reported fraud crimes have increased by 53 percent. The type of fraud crime that increased the most in 2023 compared to the previous year was card fraud and fraud through social manipulation. Reported card fraud increased by 44 percent, and fraud through social manipulation by 36 percent.

Crimes against persons increased slightly in 2023 (+3%). Assault was one of the crime types that, among others, was behind the increase. Abuse against adult women increased by 1,338 reported crimes (+5%) and abuse against adult men increased by 361 reported crimes (+1%). Both in terms of assaults against women and against men, it was assaults by acquaintances that accounted for the increase. However, the most common type of reported assault against men was by strangers, which accounted for 57 percent of assault crimes against men. The reverse applied to reported assault against women, where it was most common that the assault was committed by an acquaintance of the victim. They made up 80 percent of all reported assaults against women.

Although crimes against persons increased overall, certain types of crimes within the category decreased in 2023. For example, reported crimes of sexual harassment which decreased by 574 reported crimes (‒6%) compared to the previous year. Reported crimes of sexual harassment are mostly crimes against women or girls, which also accounted for most of the decrease. Sexual harassment against women decreased with 437 reported crimes (‒9%), and against girls with 242 reported crimes (‒6%). When reporting broken down by gender, exhibitionism is not included, which makes up just under 2 percent of the reported crimes of sexual harassment.

The crime category theft and assault crimes decreased by 3 percent. Bicycle theft was the type of theft crime that decreased the most, with 4,931 reported crimes (‒8%). One type of crime within the category that instead increased noticeably was shoplifting. In 2023, 47,446 shop thefts were reported, which was 10 percent more than in 2022. In 2023, it has become easier for shop owners to report suspected shoplifting using a special e-service, which, according to Brå, may have contributed to the increase in the statistics.
