  • Texas Governor: We are vulnerable to invasion and will defend ourselves

Texas Governor Greg Abbott caused quite a stir when he released a statement during the night of Thursday Swedish time in which it appeared that he had declared that his state is vulnerable to “invasion”.

He stated that the federal government had not fulfilled its obligations under the Constitution and that he therefore had the right to use the Texas National Guard on his own initiative against the record high illegal immigration.

The background is a conflict between Texas and the federal authorities, which require the National Guard to remove barriers with barbed wire that were set up along Mexico. The US Supreme Court recently announced a decision on the matter which, according to the federal government, means that the barriers must be removed.

Abbott's spectacular move is now supported by Donald Trump, who is calling on other states to support Texas by sending their National Guard there. According to Trump, these soldiers should help Texas prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border, and send back those who managed to enter the country.

25 Republican governors – thus leading half of the US states – have released a statement supporting “Texas' constitutional right to self-defense”.

Like Abbott, they refer to the US Constitution, which states that the federal government has a duty to protect states that are subject to invasion. Something they believe Joe Biden's administration is neglecting to do.

“Because the Biden administration has abdicated its constitutional obligations to the states, Texas has every legal right to protect the sovereignty of our states and our nation,” the governors write.
