The Christian Democrats and the other parties in Germany have set up a “firewall” against the AFD and have sworn never to cooperate with the party, which they are in the process of trying to outlaw.
At the same time, the AFD has have now become so large that it looks like it will be impossible for the Christian Democrats to be in power in many states without joining forces with the left.
The association Werteunion, which brings together more conservative members of the Christian Democratic parties CDU and CSU, has now decided to start its own party ahead of the elections in the East German states of Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg later this year.
The leader of Werteunion is Hans-Georg Maaßen, former head of the German constitutional protection agency BFV. He does not rule out cooperation with the AFD.
– I do not recognize a firewall, he says according to Tagesspiegel.
The CDU has already initiated an exclusion case against Maaßen, who is accused of having stated ” far-right' and 'anti-Semitic'.
Both the CDU and the CSU (which is the Christian Democratic Party of Bavaria) have reacted strongly to the new party formation and banned their members from being members of the Wertunion at the same time. However, the new party has seen a rapid and strong influx of thousands of members.
Even on the left wing, a similar development critical of the establishment can be seen in Germany. The leftist profile Sahra Wagenknecht has recently founded a new party that is critical of both the immigration policy and the authorities' support for the war in Ukraine.
