Domestic. Last year, 4,228 cases of the venereal disease gonorrhea – which is mainly spread by homosexual men – were registered in Sweden. That is an increase of 25 percent compared to the year before.

In 15 years, the increase in the number of cases has been a whopping 700 percent.
The problem is particularly large in the capital. According to SVT, one in two was infected, corresponding to 2,478 people, from Stockholm County in 2023.
– More sexual contacts and more testing are likely explanations, says Finn Filén, senior physician at Venhälsan at Södersjukhuset, to SVT Nyheter Stockholm.
An alarming trend is that the spread of infection does not only occur via homosexual men, but is more often seen among heterosexuals and middle-aged people.
– It continues to increase. During the pandemic years, we had a reduction, but then we have started to pick up again, says Inga Velicko at the Public Health Agency, to TT.
